Why do we ‘Comfort Eat’?

When we are stressed, sad, tired or just had a traumatic experience we usually reach for carbohydrate and sugar rich foods.

I’m not talking about lovely sweet fruit here but rather chocolate, fizzy drinks and cake.

Foods that fill us up quickly like pastas, potatoes and bread.

Tryptophan is an amino acid found in many foods. Carbohydrate foods act on stored tryptophan and insulin is produced. This in turn boosts your serotonin levels.

Serotonin makes you feel sleepy and relaxed. The best part, it takes all of 30 minutes!

The Vicious Circle of Sugar Spikes

We are feeling rundown, lacking energy and miserable. So what do we do? We reach for a fizzy drink and chocolate.

Why? Because it almost instantly gives us a boost and makes us feel better.

What happens though when it wears off and drops us even lower than before? Well if it made us feel so good the first time, then surely it will make me feel better the next time?

Yes it will once again lift you but it will drop you even lower the next time.

If you do not break the circle, you will get deeper and deeper into the false ups and then the bottomless pit.

How to avoid both these pit falls by eating correctly.

Certain foods will give you a natural high and feeling of euphoria without the negative effects. They will also not adversely affect your health.

These foods should be a part of your daily eating plan and will help to avoid depression, stress and anxiety. They will also help you to cope better during difficult periods.
